Five-round fights are currently reserved only for championship bouts in the UFC, but that may not be the case for long.

On Friday, UFC President Dana White discussed the possibility of big -- but not title -- fights using the 25-minute time limit.

“We’re very close to [implementing five-round non-title fights]” White revealed during the Fan Expo Q&A session while promoting UFC 129.

The extra two rounds for important fights would likely help to prevent those bouts from ending in draws, as in the recent case of B.J. Penn and Jon Fitch at UFC 127 in February. However, the UFC boss says he had another bout in mind for the promotion's inaugural foray into five-rounders without a title on the line.

“We were actually going to start it with Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos [at UFC 131], but we had already made the fight,” White said. “But we already made the fight, so it’s kind of hard to go back to those guys after you already make the fight and say that it is going to be five [rounds] instead of three.”

Though the UFC head has discussed the topic of five and even seven-round fights in the past, this appears to be the most serious iteration of that discussion. Though White has also expressed his desire to see seven-round title fights, that topic was not broached on Friday.

Eller de kunne tage 1x10 + 3x5 i alle kampe.
men så der er nok mange fightere som ville få det svært i første runde

Så blev det en realitet:

UFC President Dana White had a lot to say on Thursday, as the promotion head made several announcements regarding the promotion's future for 2011 and beyond.

First, three-round main events are soon to be extinct in the UFC. The organization will move to five-round headliners for all bouts signed in the future, regardless of whether a title is contested.

White had previously mentioned that five-round main events were imminent for the promotion, but he declined to offer a concrete time table during that announcement. On Thursday, White gave those in attendance a more definitive picture, revealing that headlining non-title bouts will no longer be signed as three-round affairs. However, fights that have already been inked as three-rounders will remain 15-minute contests, such as in the case of Phil Davis and Rashad Evans’ duel at UFC 133.
Additionally, the UFC boss also revealed that the promotion will unveil a flyweight division in the near-future, possibly even by year's end. While the promotion is currently in talks to acquire new flyweight talent, two names in particular jump out as likely candidates for the new, 125-pound division. Two of the UFC's smaller bantamweights, both Joseph Benavidez and Demetrious Johnson have long been rumored as candidates for a potential cut to flyweight if such an opportunity existed, though nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

While the promotion will begin to promote 125-pound affairs in the near-future, While also asserted that it will take time to build the division and eventually crown a champion.

On a different note, White revealed that Strikeforce welterweight king Nick Diaz will vacate his title in order to challenge UFC champion Georges St. Pierre for his strap at UFC 137 in October. Henceforth, Diaz will be regarded as a UFC fighter, though he could return to Strikeforce at a hypothetical point in the future. As a result, two to-be-named Strikeforce contenders will battle later this year to decide a new 170-pound ace of the hexagonal cage.

There's a celebration going on in the Land of Fagan today. Both Kevin Iole and Brett Okamoto report via Twitter that UFC President Dana White announced that, going forward, all UFC main events will be scheduled for five rounds, regardless of whether a title is at stake. The policy will start following the Rashad Evans/Phil Davis main event at UFC 133, as bout agreements for that fight have already been signed.

There's been no word on whether this applies only PPV/numbered events, or if free TV shows will be headlined by five-rounders as well. [See below.]

I first championed this idea way back in February of 2009 in response to a piece over at Fightlinker. I laid out my reasons for supporting a push for more five-round fights in August of that year:

More decisive finishes - From my previous post on the topic, I showed that - in a limited sample size - five round title fights are finished 77% of the time as compared to the MMA average of 67% for three round affairs. More fights avoiding the mysterious hands of the judges the better.
Less importance per round - In a three round fight, each round makes up 33% of a judge's score card. A round in a five round bout is only worth 20%. For example, in the Caol Uno/Spencer Fisher fight at UFC 99, if you score the first two rounds (which were very close) to Fisher, Uno has to win a dominant 10-8 third just for a draw. With two additional rounds, Uno would have ample time to make up lost ground (if not finish his opponent).
More quality at the top of the cards - I'm an extremist. The more five-round fights, the better. I understand that's a minority position, and unlikely to come to fruition in the event that NSAC opens the five-round door. That said, if the UFC utilizes the five round fight for all main and co-main events, that's potentially 20 additional minutes of high-level MMA. Who can argue with that?
The most prevalent argument I've heard against mandatory five-round fights atop of shows centered around the fear that more five-round fights would lead to fewer prelims fights being aired. While I've always found that a backward view (I would much rather see ten minutes of, say, Quinton Jackson and Lyoto Machida than a prelim fight between Kyle Kingsbury and Fabio Maldonado), the point is moot given the UFC's recent practice of broadcasting their entire prelim lineup on Facebook (and now Youtube) and Spike TV.

MMA Weekly brings some quotes from Dana White:

"What I don't want to do to guys, fights that we've already made and they signed the bout agreement, you're mentally training for a 3 round fight. ‘Oh now it's 5 rounds', you can't do that to guys," White stated.

White was specific in stating all future bout agreements for main event non-title fights would be five round affairs.

"From this day forward as we speak right here, right now today, every fight that is a main event that is not a title fight will be a five round fight," said White. "For Spike and everything else."
